So Why Haven’t You Cut Cable Yet?

cancelling cable

We cut the cord on satellite TV over two years ago. It took a long time to get to a place where we were ready to let go, but it’s been nothing but positive. Not only do we save money every month, we choose when and what to watch, resulting in way less TV altogether. Who has time to watch TV when there are side businesses to hustle, rental properties to be found, and family trips to be planned? In fact, TV is one of the biggest time sucks known to man. In years past, I can’t count how many times I’ve turned the TV on for background noise only to find myself four hours later caught up in a Law and Order marathon. I can’t think of one benefit to having cable or satellite TV, and I’m going to shoot down every excuse today and ask why haven’t you cut cable yet? Cutting Cable Does Not Mean No TV At the end of a long day, I like to sit down and watch a show as much as the next person, but you don’t need cable to do that. With all the streaming and on demand options available, ...

Cool, Cheap Christmas Gifts for Teachers and Such

affordable gifts for teachers and office colleaagues

The older I get, the less I like gifts. I’m to a point where if there is something I want and value, I’ll budget for it and buy it myself. I hate getting or giving things out of obligation, but there are times when you have people in your life that require a holiday gift. Teachers are saints, and I will always send some sort of gift for the people who spend 7 hours a day educating my daughter. There are also neighbors, work colleagues, and family members who might not rank high on the gift list, but  you’d feel crappy if they got you something and you had nothing for them. Here are some cool, cheap gifts that work great for teachers and such. Start Early I really don’t enjoy thinking about Christmas until after Thanksgiving, but it’s smart to start planning now. Make a list of who you need to buy for and how much you want to spend. That way, if you see a deal, you can jump on it instead of waiting until the last minute. I am determined to get all my shopping done this year before Thanksgiving so I won’t be tempted to go ...

Is Kindle Unlimited A Good Deal?

unlimited books on Kindle for $9.99 per month

One of my biggest impulse buy temptations is Kindle books. For years, I was a hold out and refused adapting to e-books. I thought I preferred an actual text in my hands, and I liked the look of books on a shelf. Doesn’t that make you seem smarter? Anyway, my office staff gave me a Kindle, 2nd generation a few years ago, and I was hooked. No more carrying books around. No more not having a book when I want one. I upgraded to a about a year ago, and it’s like crack for avid readers. Almost any book in a few seconds. What’s not to like? Well, that also presents a problem. I have been known to binge read. It’s kind of like binge watching, but can cost much more if you have to buy several books in a series. I am not one who can space it out either. It’s a wonder my family got fed during the four days it took me to read the Hunger Games trilogy. I try to limit my Kindle purchases, but it’s really hard if I find a series or author I like. When I heard about Kindle Unlimited, I wondered if ...

6 Things That Are Cheaper on Amazon Prime than at Walmart

6 items cheaper on Amazon than Walmart

I’ve shared many times before how living in a small town limits your shopping options, at least in brick and mortar stores. The only place in town to buy many household goods and non-grocery items is Walmart. I’ve had way too many bad shopping experiences there and found myself getting mad before I even walked in the door, so as a resolution to myself and my well being, I decided to boycott purchases at Walmart in 2014. Since we really don’t have other options without driving at least 50 miles, I turned to Amazon for help. Here are six things I’ve found that are surprisingly cheaper on Amazon than at Walmart. Before you start reading my comparison between the two, make sure you go check out these 25 money saving tips you can use on Amazon. These are perfect and will help you each and every time you shop on Amazon.com. Amazon Versus Walmart I signed up for Amazon Prime early this year. At $79 (now $99 per year), I figured it was worth it. Regular shipping is very slow to our area, and if I am going to replace the need for last minute Walmart items, I need to ...

Get Mom a Cool Gift This Mother’s Day: Samsung LED TV Giveaway

If you’re a Mom or if you have a Mom, you probably know that we will like whatever you give us for Mother’s Day (unless it’s a mop). I do love handmade gifts from my daughter or a dinner cooked by someone else. However, it might be a good idea to get Mom or Grandma engaged in the 21st century by giving an electronic gift this year. I recently used some of my credit card reward points to get a Kindle Fire. Let me say that I am not very tech savvy, but it’s about the easiest thing I’ve ever used. I love to multitask, so I can watch shows or read books while I’m using the exercise bike or waiting for my daughter to finish dance class. Yes, you can spend a fortune on buying things from Amazon, but you can also sync it up to your local library to check books, and Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon Prime are pretty affordable for watching shows or movies. E readers are also great for senior citizens because you can change the font to a larger type. We have several patients with macular degeneration who have trouble with standard print, but are ...
