Save on Groceries: Stop Buying These 9 Items

save on groceries

Saving money is on the minds of quite a few people these days, and cutting back on your grocery bill is one way you may be able to tighten your budget a little. Personally, groceries is one area of my budget that tends to be a slippery slope, so I try to go back and review my grocery budget and purchases every few months to make sure I stay on track. Sure, food is a necessity and buying groceries is a lot cheaper than eating out, but that doesn’t mean you can buy groceries all willy-nilly because they are a “need” and not a “want”. There are some items at the grocery store that are definitely not a need. Pay attention to what you put in your cart before you pay so you save on groceries. In fact, if you want to save the most money, stop buying these 9 items as part of your regular grocery shopping. 1 Alcohol Cut back your alcohol consumption or eliminate it altogether to save money in your budget each month. If you must purchase alcohol, don’t buy it at a grocery store. It’s usually higher there than at a Sam’s, Costco, or another warehouse ...

Why it Pays to Organize Your Grocery List

organize your grocery list

I hate to grocery shop. Like I really loathe it. It takes up a lot of time no matter when I go to the store. I’ve tried going on the weekends, but that’s when all of the 9 to 5 40-hour-a-week-ers go to the store. I’ve tried going during their work hours, but that’s when the elderly people who like to walk slowly and talk in the middle of aisles tend to go to the store. That’s also when the stay-at-home-moms go and it never fails that there’s at least one screaming child in the grocery store. Sigh! (No dig to the moms, I know it’s tough to manage kids in a grocery store.) I know several other people who also dislike grocery shopping. But it’s kind of like doing laundry because it doesn’t really matter that we dislike doing it since it still has to get done if you don’t want to survive off of fast food. But there are ways to make it go faster and smoother. One way is to organize your grocery list. Here’s why you should organize your grocery list. Save Time I try to write my list in the order of where the items ...

Americans Are Spending More In Restaurants Than In Grocery Stores

spending more eating out than on groceries

I came across this article last week  that said January 2015 was the first month that Americans are spending more in restaurants than in grocery stores. I guess I’m not surprised. It seems that whenever we go out to eat, the restaurant is always packed. Even in our small town, it seems there are tons of people eating out. The article took it as a good sign because it meant the economy was recovering, but I’m not so sure. Cost of Eating Out Versus Eating At Home While the yahoo article quoted one diner as saying he could eat cheaper at restaurants than at home, I think that’s misleading. In his case, he was talking about buying a good steak for $32 at the grocery store compared to ordering a steak for less at a restaurant. I’m not sure what kind of steak he was buying, but I don’t think groceries as a whole cost more than ordering out. I’m sure if all you buy is local, grass fed filet mignon and organic hand made potato chips from Whole Foods, you can rack up a pretty hefty grocery bill. However, shopping at a regular supermarket or discount grocer is not ...

Girl Scout Cookies Cost How Much?

It’s the end of January. Do you know what that means? No, it isn’t yet time to pay taxes, start Christmas shopping, or begin working on that tan for swimsuit season. It’s Girl Scout Cookie time! Yes, beginning this Sunday, those adorable, smiling Girl Scouts will be out with a vengeance. They will have the color coded order forms with those mouth watering pictures of our favorites, like Samoas, Thin Mints, and Tagalongs. I admit, I have loved Girl Scout Cookies for as long as I can remember. My Mom used to come home with a big bag of them every year around this time. You have to admit, the Girl Scouts know how to market, but of course, as a reformed spending addict, I have to ask, “Girl Scout Cookies cost how much?” History of the Girl Scout Cookie Girl Scouts started selling cookies as early as 1917 as a way to raise money. Through the years, the process has evolved. Currently there are two licensed bakers that produce a maximum of eight varieties of cookies each season. It is mandatory that three of the varieties are Trefoils, Do- Si -Do’s and my favorite, Thin Mints. Girl Scout Cookie ...

5 Guaranteed Ways to Save Money on Groceries

For the past few months I have made it a priority to save money on groceries. Previously, I shopped whenever the urge hit and bought whatever looked good, often spending $500 or more  a month at the grocery store. Well, no more. I’ve cut my budget to $350 a month, including household goods and dog food. Last month I came in close, but $.79 under budget. My old self would have called that a miracle, but there actually isn’t anything miraculous about it. If you follow these five steps, there’s no way you won’t save money on groceries. Don’t go to the Store. But we have to eat, right? Yes, but if you run by the store to grab one or two things, you usually end up buying more and picking up a rotisserie chicken on the way out instead of going home to cook.  Make one or two big shops a month and if you need to run in to buy milk or bananas, get only what you came for, and don’t go at dinner time! Make a Meal Plan. If you want to only shop once or twice a month, you have to know what to get so you won’t ...
