How to Deal with Stress as a Business Owner

Everyone has to deal with stress from time to time. It could be from a difficult situation or relationship in your personal life. Or, perhaps it’s your professional life that is causing you stress and anxiety instead. If it is the latter, and you are also the owner of the business you work for, there are ways to help you deal with stress as a business owner.

1. Don’t Push Beyond Your Limits

Pushing past your emotional, psychological, and physical limits is a problem many of us have. We go and go until we nearly drop from exhaustion. Once our bodies tell us we must stop and rest, we do, although reluctantly. It seems that some of us are nearly incapable of relaxing until we are forced to. As an alternative, don’t push beyond your limits. Know what those limits are and catch a few hours extra sleep now and then or take a break and go for a short walk during the day to reduce your stress limits so you can run your business at its optimum.

2. Eat Healthy Foods

Its advice we hear often but still don’t always follow. Eat right, eat healthy, and drink plenty of water and you will feel and perform at your best. Can you tell when you haven’t been eating right? I can. I always feel sluggish and tired when I eat too many sugary, carb-loaded foods. Reducing these types of foods and instead eating fresh fruits and veggies can make a difference in how you feel and how you deal with stress. When you are already tired and don’t feel well, the slightest stress feels ten times worse. Take care of yourself and you will be able to handle whatever comes your way as a business owner.

3. Get Enough Sleep

When you are rested you can deal with stress. When you aren’t, the smallest problem can feel like a mountain you can’t get over. Don’t let small problems become big ones or be the straw that broke the camel’s back. Lack of sleep will eventually affect how you function as well as how you deal with stress. In addition, it leads to health problems, weight gain and other undesirable health issues. Catch a nap if you can over your lunch hour. You will be amazed at how much easier it is to deal with stress in your business when you are rested.

4. Move Your Body

Getting some exercise routinely during your week gives you more energy. When you walk, bicycle, or do whatever other form of exercise you like it helps your body work at peak performance. But it doesn’t have to be a 10 mile run to give you the benefits of exercise and reduce stress. Try sneaking a 20 minute brisk paced walk into your daily routine. Adding exercise can alleviate stress and help you deal with work issues more productively during your business day.

5. Get Help

If you are stressed because you are trying to do it all, maybe you need some help. Examine whether your stress is business related or personal. Do you need to hire a part time employee to take on some of the work load of your business? Or, would it help to hire a housekeeper to help out at home? Reducing a few of the items on your to do list can do wonders for your outlook and bring down stress levels.

6. Hire a Consultant

When the above stress reducers are not enough maybe it is time to take a different approach. Hiring a consultant or business coach can help you reduce stress levels by giving you someone else to bounce ideas off of. In addition, a consultant can help you devise business strategies to help your business grow and be successful, further eliminating stress.
