My Life as a Country Song

Well it’s been an interesting week around here. I was really in a complainy pants mood until I read a couple of posts and realized I’m acting like a toddler, and my problems are all first world. Now that I know that my problems are not really problems at all, we can laugh at my obstacles from the past few days.

Sunday: I’ve been having little, itchy bumps in odd places, like behind my ear. Am I getting adult acne? Nope, found out my dog has fleas. We don’t usually have to worry about fleas here because of the low humidity, but with all the rain, I guess they are out in full force. After a mad trip on Sunday night for flea shampoo, constant washing and vacuuming, and some flea medicine, I think we got them. I still can’t stand the thought that bugs were crawling on me in my sleep, but I survived.

Monday: I love my new site, but one of the plugins keeps turning off and takes all the posts off my homepage. See, when my site was ugly, it was all my design. I researched every plugin and layout for hours. If something when wrong in the beginning, it sometimes took me days to fix it, but no one read this blog back then, so it really didn’t matter. Now I feel like someone has given me this pretty new theme, but I have no idea how to work the gadgets. This problem is not something I did, and we are trying to figure it out. I’m all for nixing the design and starting over, but obviously  my designer is not happy about that. Hopefully it will be fixed soon, but I apologize to anyone who has come up or will come up to an empty homepage.

Tuesday: Government shuts down. In a way, I’m glad because it makes it more apparent that morons are running this country, and they care more about politics than actually making things better, but I also get about 30% of my salary from a government job.  I’m a bit worried. I really feel for those who are employed full time in “non-necessary” government positions. Please go vote next time!

Wednesday: Government still closed but I found out that my job is “exempted” from the shutdown because it’s in health care, and that my actual pay comes from third party (billing insurances) rather than Congress. Yipee! Why did I not bother to know that before?

Thursday: I refuse to dwell on negative thoughts any longer, although I can’t stop the nagging feeling that I’ll get to Fincon and everyone will find out that I have no idea what I’m doing. Oh well, just nod and smile if you don’t understand what someone is talking about.

Friday: I am going unplugged for a trip this weekend. I won’t be able to reset my site when it goes down, but there are worse things in the world.

I’m going to take extra food to the food bank to make up for my poor attitude this week in case the karma gods feel the need to seek revenge. Also, looking on the bright side,  I could always write a country song called “Gover’ment Wants My Job and the Hound  Got Fleas

Printable Cheat Sheet for Cracking the Code

Kyle at Rather Be Shopping put out a really useful guide for knowing when stores are offering rock bottom prices. I asked why he couldn’t make a printable, wallet sized card with this info, and he did just that! Thanks Kyle. You can get one for yourself here.

Thanks so much for the mentions this week. I’d fix your theme, but I probably don’t know how.

20/20 Posts of the Week

I haven’t done a roundup for a couple of weeks, but I actually had a little more time to read this week, even with the fleas and such.

Hedonic Adaptation to Savings at Planting Our Pennies. It’s a good problem to have.

The Case for Earning More at Reach Financial Independence. I’m so glad Pauline wrote this post. I don’t feel as guilty about having my daily fountain diet Pepsi.

Dealing With an Emergency Without an Emergency Fund at Modest Money. I”m not sure I would be comfortable doing this, but I get the point.

The Path I Took To College at Journey to Saving. Yes, do your research!

My Plan for Tackling $300K in Student Loan Debt at Young Adult Money. Seems like a crazy number, but they have a great plan.

Have a great weekend!

Anybody else ever had fleas?

  1. Glad you solved the flea problem and thanks for the links.

  2. Thanks for the mention, Kim! Our cat got fleas once – what a huge PITA! Thanks for giving me a good kick in the pants too, as I’ve been feeling a bit whiny about the goings on in this country. Have a great unplugged weekend. 🙂

    • You know, we were out camping this weekend and lots of BLM stuff was closed, but it made us discover some new places we probably would never have gone if the more popular areas were open. I guess I am thankful to the shutdown for that at least.

  3. When we adopted Kitty PoP from the shelter, we unknowingly adopted a bunch of flea eggs, too. Not fun for any of us when they hatched. Luckily they were pretty easy to get rid of and we’ve never seen any since. =)

    • I think we knocked ours all out the first day. At least I haven’t seen any new ones. The vet was telling me that her son went to school with fleas when he was younger. The teacher caught some and put them in a plastic bag to show her. At least we didn’t get that far.

  4. My cat got fleas a year or so ago. I spent all weekend shampooing vacuuming and otherwise sterilizing our house until it smelled like a hospital. I briefly considered wrapping my cat in Saran Wrap in case any survived the flea massacre. Every time I get a bump I have a silent freak out that they’re back.

  5. My friend’s apt was just infested with fleas and when I went over to feed him while my friend was on vacation I looked down and saw a TON on my legs. They bit me all over my legs. Nasty little suckers. Luckily I haven’t had the same problem with my cat. It is very annoying. My complaint is that I was showing my volleyball student what not to do in hitting to protect your back and in doing so I hurt my own friggen back! Now I take a few steps and it spasms and I’m supposed to play in a couple hours. Hopefully once it warms up it will feel better. Ugh. My song would be called My Achy Back. 🙂 Have fun unplugging this weekend!

  6. Thank you for the mention! Fleas, ugh!! A few years ago, my ex started noticing that his legs had little bumps all over, and lo and behold, we found fleas on our cats. We had a dog at the time, so I’m assuming they jumped around and liked the cats better. The cats liked to lay on the bed, and I am just thankful they stayed away from me! I don’t know how I escaped. We flea bombed the room, vacuumed and cleaned everything really well, and the problem was solved. It can be really difficult to kill the cycle because the eggs get embedded in the carpet (if you have any). Best of luck with it, and have a great time being unplugged!

  7. The new site design looks great! Enjoy your weekend

  8. Sorry to hear you have been running into some blog issues. I did notice it happened to me once when I came over. The good part is you sound optimistic that things will work out and you know what, they will. Have a great week and smile.

  9. Little tiny insects like fleas would drive crazy. I am itching just thinking about it.Enjoy your weekend.

    • If there is an itchy bug, it will bite me. My husband never gets bitten by anything, and I can be right beside him and have 20 bites. Not fair at all!

  10. Don’t want to imagine fleas crawling all over me! Can’t stomach the thought.
Site looks great…that fear of getting to Fincon and everyone realizing you don’t know what yo doing…wouldn’t worry so much, a lot of bloggers seem to be in the same worry-boat 🙂

  11. I visited your so-called “ugly” site before you did the re-design. I thought the look was pretty good., but I like your current one as well. I would like to get more into design and make my blog look prettier. I don’t think it looks ugly, but just plain and blah. People are still visiting it though, so that’s a good sign. 🙂

    • I begin to wonder how much the design even matters in the whole scheme of things. I get bored with things and like to change them, but I will certainly think twice before changing again.

  12. Hey Kim – thanks for sharing my printable cheat sheet, very cool! I hope you had a great weekend too.
