What Would You Do With $500?

using an extra $500

I love to find articles about the best ways to use an amount of cash. No matter what your financial beliefs, there are basically four ways to use money: spend it, save it, invest it, give it away. The good folks at Mt Edgecumbe Hospital in Sitka, AK are giving me $600 for meals next week while I’m working at their clinic. Unless I make lots of friends and go out every night, I’ll probably get most of my food from the grocery or as take out since I hate eating in restaurants by myself. I’m guessing that will probably take about $100. That leaves me five Benjamins to use however I want. What would you do with $500? Spend It If I had consumer debt, I’d probably use my extra $500 toward paying it off. $500 is not chump change, and gaining a windfall to put toward debt can be a great shot in the arm to sustain motivation toward debt payoff goals. Since I don’t have that type debt anymore, I could use this money to spend on holiday gifts or for our trip to Mexico that’s coming up next month. We also need a new couch in ...

Friday Life and Goals Update

life and goals update

Happy Friday everyone. Since we are already a quarter into this year, I though it was time for a life and goal update. We Have a Job! We are very excited this week because we found out that Jim actually has a job next year! Well, we knew could always go back into the classroom, but that would have been a huge cut in pay. (Love it when politicians make rules about stuff they have no clue about) Anyway, he did such a great job last year that his superiors created a job for him that will be 80% school administration and 20% working to train quality teachers throughout our region. He also got a small bump in pay, so did I say how happy we are? His job will require some long hours and travel, and it’s dang hard to get our kiddo to and from where she needs to be when he’s busy and I have to work. I could cut my hours, but I feel like it’s only been a short while since we’ve been firing on ...

“Twas The Week Before Christmas”

This is a guest post. If you would like to submit a guest post, please read this policy and contact me. AKA (Holy Cow! I have to buy what?) I know, it seems that Christmas always ‘sneaks up on people’.  The funny thing is, Christmas is the same time every year.  So what winds up happening is that thing called ‘Life’.  Other priorities, other “Gotta Do’s” gotta get done and like the old saying goes “If it wasn’t for the last minute, nothing would get done”.  But before you go out doing that last minute Christmas Shopping, stop and think not just about what needs to be done this week, but let’s take a second and plan for next year and add some thoughts about what to do for this year. Odds are, if you’re reading this, (Thank you Kim, BTW) you have at least a passing interest in keeping an ‘Eye on the Dollar’.  In the hopes of keeping you from spending much more than you need at the last minute, let’s do two things in the few minutes we have together. 1.  Take stock of our ‘needs’ and ‘wants’. Of course it’s easy for me to say that, because we ...
