How to Start Your Financial Future Out on the Right Foot – Part Deux

Financial Future

Last time we talked about starting out your financial future when embarking on adulthood. This is a crucial time in anyone’s life because the decisions that you make during early adulthood can really make or break your future financially. We broke down the two biggies in the last article: cash and credit. In this article, we are going to dive into your credit score and debit cards. So let’s jump in! Benefits of Increasing Your Credit Score If you are putting things on credit and not paying off your monthly balance, then you are directly affecting your credit score NEGATIVELY. This is the opposite of what you want to do because your credit score can impact more than you think it can. On the flip side, if you pay your credit card off every month, you are only INCREASING your credit score. The bonus here is that the higher your credit score, the more you qualify for big purchases in the future. Two of these biggies are cars and houses, with a smaller third possibility at business loans and/or credit cards to start a business. Some employers and rental companies even look at your credit score as an indicator of ...

Make Money While Shopping

save money on grocery shopping

How many of you like to shop online? Not only does online shopping make life easier, it can save money. After using Amazon Prime for over a year, I can honestly say that I’ve spent less on household products. One, because prices are often cheaper than at Walmart, and two, because I can get what I need without the temptation of having to walk past all the other items in the store. Unfortunately, I can’t buy everything I need at Amazon, so I do  have to use other stores, brick and mortar or online. Fortunately, there are actually ways to make money while shopping. Ebates If you are shopping online without using a cash back portal, you’re throwing money away. I don’t ever advocate buying things because of a coupon or cash back, but if you need to buy it anyway, why not take advantage? There are several online shopping portals that offer cash back for online purchases, but I really don’t have the desire to sort through all of them to save an extra half percent. I pretty much use Ebates as my home base when I need to buy something online. It’s really simple. Set up an account ...

Easy Ways To Earn Extra Money

making extra money

I’ve found my ways to make extra money through rental property and blogging, but there are tons more opportunities out there for people looking to make extra income. If you have a skill or hobby, there is a good chance you can get paid to do it. Even if you have little imagination and no time, there are easy ways to earn extra money. Rent A Room In Your House This might be the easiest way to earn extra money without very much work. You do have to give up some privacy, but taking on a renter is income from day one. Personally, I would not want a random person living in my home while my daughter is young, but we would consider it once we’re empty nesters. There are ways to find a good tenant if you don’t want to advertise to the general public. You can offer a room to student interns or residents. When I was in my last year of optometry school, students had to do three month rotations in different cities throughout the year. It was almost impossible to find housing unless you had the money to live in a hotel or had relatives in the ...

Should I Try To Make Less Money?

less taxes with lower income

A huge topic in the online finance community is making more money. I read articles about how to make more money through side income or ways to increase your salary. For the last few years, I’ve been slurping those up like cold drinks on a hot day. When trying to get out of debt, you really can’t make enough money or make it fast enough. What about once those goals are met? Are there any negatives to earning more income? Is there ever a situation where I should try to make less money? Health Insurance My family would never qualify for Obamacare subsidies because Jim’s work has a group plan that we could join for $800 a month, but let’s assume he did not. For our family of three, if we made under $79,000, we could qualify for a subsidy. Our insurance policy might actually cover something, unlike our current $10,000 deductible plan. Luckily, we don’t have many health care expenses, as we’ve been pretty healthy up to this point. This isn’t really a huge issue at the moment. My daughter and I are still on a grandfathered Blue Cross plan that costs only $265 per month, so even with ...
