Frugal Trip To Yellowstone National Park

I’m really sad to see summer come to an end. In Colorado, we are already having cooler temperatures, and I can’t help but notice that the sun is sleeping in and going to bed later than just a few weeks ago.  We decided to go on one more blow out road trip before summer is gone, and I’m VERY excited that we chose a national park. It will be a whirlwind, but here’s how we’re planning our frugal trip to Yellowstone! Why Yellowstone? Well, because it’s maybe the most famous national park, and it’s a goal of mine to see them all before I kick the bucket. Yellowstone is a 10 hour drive from us, so not close, but it’s a no brainer to road trip it. I have always wanted to visit Yellowstone since I was a kid. I’m not even sure how I knew about it. They don’t talk much about destinations west of the Mississippi in rural Kentucky, but geysers have always fascinated me. I’m not sure why we’ve never been now that we live closer, probably because it’s still a haul. A long weekend is probably not the best way to see the park, but sometimes ...

The Most Unfrugal Purchase I’ve Made in Years

letting kids plan the birthday party

Shannon from Financially Blonde had a great post on last week about how she almost never pays full price for anything. After reading that post, I tend to agree with her point of view that planning and shopping around almost always turns up a better deal. I try really hard to always get the best value for money we spend. Sometimes it is harder when you live in a small town and need or want something fast. Recently, I made a very frivolous and unfrugal purchase, and honestly, I don’t feel bad at all. My Child Is Probably Really Spoiled I do realize that my daughter has it better than most. She gets to live in a pretty nice house. She eats lots of home cooked meals made with organic vegetables and fruits. She gets all kinds of time with Jim and I. She has dance and ski lessons. We take awesome trips. She has already seen way more of the country in her 7 years than I did in my first two decades. That being said, I can’t apologize for being able to offer her that lifestyle. We’ve worked hard for it, and I think parents always want their children ...

What to do Before Your Car Breaks Down on a Road Trip

One of the disadvantages of living in a rural area is that we are at least four hours from the nearest major airport. It is very expensive and time consuming to fly out locallly.  As a result, we tend to drive if the destination can be reached in 12 hours or less. Jim and I had a wonderful road trip to San Diego recently. It was wonderful until our car died on the way home, and we were left stranded on the side of the interstate in 100+ degree temperatures. Hopefully, my experience will make you think about what to do BEFORE your car breaks down on a road trip. Road Side Assistance Now, I am all about saving money on car insurance. When we broke down, I honestly had no idea if our policy covered road side assistance. I assumed it didn’t because that sounds like something I would decline to save a few bucks. I called anyway, hoping I  hadn’t gone completely cheap when I ordered the policy. Luckily, we did have coverage, which included towing up to 25 miles. Since it was Sunday, I had to wait on hold for a few minutes until the representative located ...
