What Do You Really Want for Christmas?

December was a month of insanity at our house. Not only were we dealing with all the holiday hooplah, everything that I put into motion over 2 years ago has come to a crescendo all within three weeks time! Earlier in the month, I signed closing documents on the purchase of a commercial building, and we sold our share of a potential nightmare investment to get out of the house flipping business. While those were big deals, the biggest happens today when I sign documents to sell my optometry practice. After 11 years of being a small business owner, if all goes as planned,  I’m out of the game. How Does It Feel? Surprisingly, it feels very neutral. I am a bit sad in some ways, and happy in others. There are good and bad things about being the boss. When I hatched this plan in late 2010, we were drowning in debt. I was burned out, but it really felt like I was trapped in the cycle of working crazy hours to pay the bills. The concept of multiple streams of income had never crossed my radar. My business had always made good money, so why on earth would I ...

Sunday Life Updates

We just got back from a mini trip this weekend. The optometrists in Western Colorado have recently formed a society to offer continuing education and networking, much like optometrists in Denver have been doing for years. Geography is a huge drawback to those of us in the less populated areas. We still had to drive 3.5 hours to make the meeting, but it’s better than 8 hours to Denver, and I attended one of the most inspiring lectures I’ve ever heard. It deserves a whole post, so I’ll keep you guessing for now. I used to love going to a bigger city so I could visit the mall, but that isn’t nearly as fun since I have more fun saving my money instead of spending it these days. I did find our daughter some sweet deals. We got five long sleeve shirts from Gymboree for $1.99-$3.99 each.  It is so much better financially to wait until after school starts to buy clothes! Selling My Business, Is it Ever Going to Happen? Many long time readers know that I have been trying to sell the last piece of my optometry practice for the past couple of years now. Originally, I had ...

Eyes on the Dollar 20/20 Roundup #31- Good Things

I am really happy to see this weekend. It seems like my whole family has been battling one illness or another for a few weeks now, but I hope we’re all on the mend. My daughter is in spring cleaning mode, as she labeled all of our bathroom drawers this week! I’m almost afraid to put it in writing, but it looks like the first part of  my business sale is set to close next Friday the 29th, which also happens to be my daughter’s birthday. I want to do a few posts about the experience of selling a business, but I’m not sure if that would be interesting or helpful to my readers. Let me know if you want to hear more about it or if that would bore you to tears. I also have a couple of posts coming up next week about a secret real estate deal that I have been keeping from you. You’ll have to check back Monday if you don’t die of curiosity first.

2012 Recap and 2013 Goals

Before I started blogging, everything was a jumble in my head. I had plans, but nothing written down and no specific time frame. However, there were a few things I wanted to accomplish in 2012, and I did pretty good on achieving those. Here were my top four and a look toward goals I AM writing down for 2013. 1)Start a Blog– I have been reading financial blogs for over a year. I’m not sure when it turned from lurker to commenter to blog owner, but I knew earlier this year that I wanted to give it a shot. When you face your biggest fear, it usually isn’t so bad. In the case of starting a blog, the worst thing would be that no one  reads it. If they do, they might think it sucks. I could live with that, so on August 1, Eyes on the Dollar went live. I still have no idea what I’m doing technically, but I have lots to say, and so far, some of you have listened and been very kind. I don’t think blogging will make me rich, but I do see the potential for earning some income if I can keep it ...

Does It Make Sense to Pay Off The Mortgage Early?

About two years ago, I went to an optometry conference hosted by the Public Health Service. I started my career with an PHS residency, and was very close to taking a career position with the government. I ultimately chose to go into the private sector, and bought my own practice in 2002. It has been rewarding in many ways, but I was growing disillusioned with being a business owner, and this conference made me consider going back to working at a government clinic. The wheels started turning, and now I am a month away from selling my practice. Since the buyer has worked for me for the past two years, I am comfortable carrying his business loan as a seller finance.  I will continue to see patients part time in my old office and at a public health clinic (best of both worlds!) on a part time basis. I own our office building, and the buyer will stay in the same space and rent from me. With my husband’s income, my part-time income,  rental income from our residential and commercial properties, and the loan payment from my buyer, we should be doing well barring some unforeseen circumstance. Now that I’ve gone around the world with that introduction, the big question of ...
